PRESS RELEASE
Data Conversion Laboratory Enhances Access and Discovery for Emerald Publishing’s 1.3 Million-File Portfolio
Expanding Reach for a Global Audience and a More Inclusive Future

Fresh Meadows, NY, March 11, 2025Data Conversion Laboratory (DCL), an industry leader in structured data and content transformations, is supporting the evolution of Emerald Publishing’s Emerald Insight, an industry-leading digital research platform. DCL is actively converting the extensive portfolios of Emerald and the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE), including journal articles, books, cases, briefings, and other content, into enhanced XML for optimal performance on the Silverchair Platform. Over time, publishers’ collections develop issues that require updates to content infrastructure. As research advances and technology evolves, maintaining a robust and flexible content framework is essential to support new technologies, improve user experience, and expand global reach.

DCL analyzed more than 1.3 million XML, Word, and EPUB files to detect structural problems affecting usability. DCL’s Content Clarity software verified references to more than 1.4 million images, ensuring accurate in-text citations and correct asset display. This analysis identified incomplete cross-references, missing or duplicate IDs, and other embedded discrepancies that creep in over the years, enabling precise corrections during conversion to the latest JATS and BITS standards. Further, DCL is working with Emerald to improve content accessibility and discoverability by updating image-based tables and math equations into XML and MathML.

“At Emerald, we are dedicated to forging new pathways to impact, making research more accessible, and empowering communities with the knowledge they need to make decisions that truly change the world,” explains Vicky Williams, CEO at Emerald Publishing. “As part of this commitment, Emerald partnered with DCL to modernize more than 1.3 million files, ensuring structural integrity, seamless usability, and compliance with the latest JATS and BITS standards. This collaboration enables us to deliver research that is fundamental to our mission of driving impact and supporting our authors and readers."

“Emerald’s initiative maximizes the value of its portfolio, ensuring it remains dynamic, discoverable, and primed for future innovations,” states Mark Gross, President of DCL. “By structuring content for machine readability and interoperability, Emerald enables more precise, reliable, and context-rich research and discovery.”

DCL distinguishes itself by continually leading the charge in content conversion and extraction technology and creating advanced techniques to improve accuracy while reducing costs. Click here to learn more about how structured content improves discoverability, interoperability, and innovation.
